Britain is going through a fragile period of peace. After a bloody battle, the triumphant West Saxons have now taken over East England, expelling the Danes. Mercia has a peace treaty with the last Viking kingdom, Northumbria, the only obstacle to making Alfred's dream, and now Edward's son, a reality.

Utrend is finally free to return to Bebanberg, the large, impregnable castle that rightfully belongs to him, but he must fight for it. As he prepares, he discovers that not only his cousin, the son of his abusive uncle, is facing him, but also the Scots led by Constantine, who have decided to expand their territory to the south, and, of course, his eternal enemy.
