According to the legend, Cadmus, progenitor of the Thebans, killed a dragon that was the son of Ares. Enraged, the god also made him his slave for a year and forced him to sow the dragon's teeth in the earth so that fierce warriors would grow. By a clever plan of Cadmus, they exterminated each other and only five survived, who became the first citizens of Thebes. Later, Ares reconciled with Cadmus and gave him Armonia, his daughter by Aphrodite, as his wife. The main symbols of Mars were the spear and the burning torch.
